This white working class Dem is still for Obama
A Pew Research poll shows Obama losing supporting among white working class Dems. Gee, I wonder why? Could it be a month of shoving the Rev Wright boogie-man down their throats? Hillary reminding white working class Dems that Obama doesn't give a shit about them because he reads books? The media pushing some caricature of him that neglects his upbringing which was a lot less privileged than either Clinton or McCain?
Nah, it's just because he's black.
Just kidding, of course. The fact that he's black means very little to white working class Dems in the United States. They've never been bothered by the skin color of other people. Or their religion. Or their gender. Or sexual orientation. Or support for the Vietnam War... whoa, wait. Just because white working class Dems (and their historic predecessors, who may have been Whigs?) have been voting on the basis of various bigotries since the Union was created doesn't mean that has anything to do with Obama, does it?
Fortunately, the kind of Dems who'll turn away from Obama because of his skins color — and this is all about his skin color and what the means to people — are not the kind of voters the party can count on. These are voters who will turn to the GOP if the right Willy Horton ad is broadcast, or it they are promised $30 in free gas, or if they simply decide that they're too stupid to know what they're doing so they close their eyes and vote by gut.
This country deserves better, but at too many levels we don't get it. The media continues to act against the nation's good by promoting substance-less stories while incredibly important ones go ignored. The shamelessness is almost criminal, and all we can do is continue to work to get Obama elected and prove both the idiots in the media, the fear-voting white working class of any party, not to mention Hillary Clinton, just how wrong they all are.
Today, a former high-level Clinton supporter came out for Obama. A white Democrat from Indiana, he made a decision too few Americans seem willing to make: To vote for hope. Thankfully, it looks like enough other Americans will make that same choice. Next Tuesday we'll get a better idea.
